Good sushi, could-be-better service Reviewer: claire from ventura, ca I've eaten at Sumo often (which goes to show that the good sushi outweighs the bad service). I like the cucumber roll & crab roll; my husband like the HOT roll & the spicy tuna roll. I've also had the teriyaki salmon- pretty good. If they're crowded, which they usually are on weekend nights, be prepared for sloooooooow service. It's pretty hit-and-miss. I've been there when crowded and gotten great service; I've been there again when crowded & had to wait for a table, while other parties of 4 (without reservations-- and we HAD ONE) were seated & then wait and wait and ask 3x for drink refills. Good sushi-- I'd say go for lunch or during the week when it's not so crowded.

Sumo Is Cutting Corners Reviewer: David Lynch from Ojai, CA I am an expert in Sushi, particularly familar with all of the Sushi restaurants in here Ventura, and I'm familiar with the best places in LA, even hard-core Sushi from J-Town. Sumo is obviously cutting corners in their fish. I ordered a Chirashi and my wife ordered a Himachi Kama (Yellowtail collar), and both had the unmistakable taste of old (not rancid old, but just not fresh, I don't know how to say this diplomatically). There is just a huge difference between this place, and for example I Love Sushi, Koba, Sakura or even Marina Sushi. This was Sunday lunch. Unless this was just an unlucky day, I would strongly suggest you stay clear. Sumo needs to visit the LA market more frequently, at least 4 times a week. The problem is that this costs, so if the place is trying to cut corners it isn't going to happen. It all comes down to selfish greed, I'm sorry to say.

Love the Sauce!! Reviewer: Sandy E from Santa Paula My family of four love Japanese food and their is no question that this is the restaurant where we dine. I love their garden salad, it's so fresh! But the dressign is like no other, to this day i don't know what it is, the waiters tell me they make it 'in house':( tempura and chicken teriyaki are me favorite.

Our family celebrates here Reviewer: Mari from Montecito, CA We enjoy everything about Sumo! There has even been a couple times when we, just, showed up with 12 people (thinking the other had made reservations)and they have always been gracious and just made room for us. We celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, babies, whatever the occasion. The service is cooperative and kind. Thank you Sumo!
