tasty food, long wait on weekends
Reviewer: Misty
from ventura
i've been here a few times and have always had to wait on weekends, but i felt it was really good, homey food for the wait. the waiters were friendly, if busy, and acted like we were regulars, which we werent.
to the woman below complaining about being asked to hush her child or leave.... i dont have kids, but as a paying customer i do expect SOME peace and quiet. it might get noisy on weekends, sure; but there is NOTHING WORSE than a screaming brat when you're trying to enjoy your meal. i'd have asked the manager to tell you to shut your kid up, too.

hello people the rating that i put is when i was about 7 or so and that was back in the late 80's to early 90's. food and the serivice was great but now it sounds like $h!t and my mom and my sister and her friends went there for lunch and it was great. to let you know something my DAD named CARLOS VALENZUELA SR. worked there he worked there for about 10 years or so and when Pat & Frank Allison owned it and i think i know who runs it now (JoAnna) maybe ;)

What's up with wating an hour for a breakfast seat?
Reviewer: Dennis C
from VenturaCA
I don't get the Allison's mystique. The mob outside on saturdays and sundays kept us away on week-ends, so we went on a weekday. We've been there 3 or 4 times. What's the big deal here? You can teach a monkey to cook a decent breakfast. Breakfast dishes are no-brainers and high profit. The food was OK but overpriced. I've eaten breakfats all over the country, but never served a naked poached egg before; you gotta pay extra for toast with a poached egg? Allison's may not have the chain feel, but you pay a big premium in time and money for the hominess.

Maybe Corned Beef Hash & Eggs isn't their thing....
Reviewer: DS
from Oxnard
I'd have to agree with the earlier reviewer on the thought that Allison's may be going down hill. I first ate here years ago and it was excellent. Ate here again a month or so ago and it was awful. The corned beef hash & eggs was almost inedible, and the potatoes were nasty and burnt. And oversalted. Only the jam was still really good, the biscuits were too chewy. The coffee was worse than McDonalds.
What a disappointment! And if they really did ask a patron to control her child or leave, I don't know that they are a restaurant I'd want to patronize anyway! Sadly I won't be back.

Beware if you have a small child who cries
Reviewer: Theresa
from Ventura, Ca
I was in Alison's yesterday 12/14/07 for breakfast around 9. My friend and I were seated promptly as surprisingly there was no wait. My 15 month old was crying and I was trying to calm her with the apple sauce, crackers, crayons and paper that they had supplied, as well as place food and drink orders when we were approached by the owner and told that if I couldn't get my child under control that we would have to leave. We sat there for a second in stunned silence. We have 6 children between us and we have never been treated so outrageously. The owner had said we were there for 10 minutes but my friend had not even received her coffe yet. What does that say about their service if we were sitting at the table for 10 minutes and still not served all of our drinks? I beleive it was around 5 minutes but the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
As far as constructive criticism...I urge them not to do this to anyone else. Their actions will have a negative carry over effect that will, in some small way, impact their business for years to come. They have to ask themselves what kind of business they are in that they can turn away customers with crying children now that they have set a precedent. At what age do they start turning them away; 6, 9, 12 months? How long do they give the parents to calm them down; 3, 5, 10 minutes? What about other kids or adults who are disturbing customers? Is it only certain times of the day or business levels? How does a customer with a family know if they are welcome to patronize their establishment? A country cafe evokes a hometown, family friendly feeling and that is far from what we experienced. As a life long resident I need to inform other parents that they should be aware that they may be asked to leave Alison's Country Cafe if their child cries.

NO COSTUMER SERVICE SKILLS. NASTY EXPERIENCE!!!
Reviewer: ESMERALDA
from OXNARD,CA
The food was ok... but the service says everything about a restaurant! It was a terrible experience! We were charged 20% gratuity for a party of 7... We asked for a side order of sausage and the server came and let it slide on our plate instead of bringing a new clean plate ewww... The server tried taking our plates when we had not finished eating yet! The server never smiled at us and never even told us her first name... This restaurant surely does not know what customer service is all about! They give the most disrespectful service I've ever had! I will never return to this restaurant!

Best Breakfast in Ventura
Reviewer: DonnaLynn
from Ventura
Definitely always a wait for a table, but well worth it. Great and friendly service once you are seated. Awesome omelets. I am picky and get egg whites, light on the cheese, remove this, add this... they get it right every time, it comes out fast, and it's very healthy. All the veggies in the veggie omelet are cooked perfectly and it's not greasy. They also serve a wonderful side of fruit. Oh, and although I usually resist, the biscuits are huge and sooo good.
